LA BioMed is an independent, not-for-profit research institute with over 110 investigators, 600 scientists, trainees and technicians as well as administrative staff. In the 67 years since its founding, LA BioMed has made seminal contributions to science and medicine, including the modern serum cholesterol test, the creation and implementation of a training system for paramedics, and the development of enzyme replacement therapy for lysosomal storage diseases. LA BioMed intellectual property has enabled the formation of 10 spin-off companies over the last 9 years. Its ecosystem for innovation occupies 11.5 acres on the Harbor-UCLA campus in Torrance, CA. The scientific infrastructure has been further enhanced with the opening of a new research tower, providing 80,000 sf of new laboratory, office and public space.
LA BioMed is committed to being at the forefront of translational biomedical research. The current recruitment initiative will enhance its multidisciplinary, trans-sectorial expertise by adding talented investigators who will synergize with its existing vibrant and interactive research groups in Cancer, Genomics, Health Services and Outcomes, Infection and Immunity, Metabolic Diseases, Neurotherapeutics, and Respiratory Physiology and Medicine.
The successful applicant will receive a generous and competitive start-up package, office and wet or dry laboratory space, and access to state of the art facilities including animal housing, genomics and bioinformatics, immunophenotyping and cell sorting, microscopy and molecular/cellular imaging, biostatistics, and molecular pathology. Institutional support also includes the potential for seed funding, access to two IRBs, an IACUC, and grant writing assistance as well as a pro-active Business Development office that facilitates the commercialization of discoveries. A newly-established bioscience incubator now exists on campus and an industrial park for biotechnology is being developed. LA BioMed is also a partner in the UCLA Clinical and Translational Science Institute.
Successful applicants will be proposed for in-residence academic appointments at the UCLA School of Medicine at the appropriate level. More information about the institute is available at https://labiomed.org
