The SVP & President of Baylor Scott & White Research Institute (BSWRI) is accountable for all research throughout the Baylor Scott & White Health system (BSWH). BSWRI is dedicated to research endeavors that will improve the health of the communities that we serve. This includes addressing chronic conditions as well as other programs (preventative, therapeutic, post-op recovery, palliative) that will benefit patients and caregivers. The SVP & President will be the face of BSWRI to the external scientific and philanthropic community as well as to internal executives and foundation leadership. The SVP & President will champion the work of BSWRI on a national basis, building on past successes while advancing world class research in key areas such as: - Immunotherapy in cancer, infection disease, auto-immune diseases and other immunology - Oncology - Cardiology and Cardio-thoracic surgery - Diabetes - Transplant The SVP & President will partner with the BSWRI governing Board to set the strategic intentions of BSWRI in alignment with those of Baylor Scott & White Health system. The SVP & President will ensure successful execution of this strategy through operational oversight of the BSWRI leadership team including management of the Clinical Trials Offices and research support operations totaling approximately 450 employees. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS External Leadership - Lead the development of relationships with outside scientific and commercial organizations, developing partnerships, alliances, and licensing agreements necessary to support the continuing development of BSWH scientific programs. This will include: - Development of business, industry, pharmaceutical and venture capital relationships leading to the transfer of BSWH and BSWRI patented research results to industry - Facilitate prompt and effective commercialization of patented intellectual property - Drive the development, recruitment and negotiations of outside sponsored clinical trials - Oversees the evaluation of invention disclosures for patentability and commercial potential, analyze markets and coordinate all contacts with potential licensees. - Lead the institute to obtain federal funding for research including NIH, PCORI, DoD and DARPA - Prepare business plans, oversee market research and patentability searches. - Develop and implement plan for recruiting key research and clinical scientists necessary to achieve strategic goals of BSWRI - Seek and create new market opportunities for patented research results. - Work with consultants, industry and business in commercial enterprise development of patented biomedical other technologies - Connect potential investors and licensors with BSWH and BRI patented technology. - Provide support for external DSMB's (Data Safety Monitoring Board): - Cancer Immunotherapy DSMB - HIV/AIDS Vaccine DSMB - Islet Cell Transplantation DSMB Internal Leadership - Lead the achievement of the financial and operational goals of BSWRI - Oversee all operations of BSWRI, including the functions of finance, scientific staff, compliance, intellectual property/technology transfer, grants and contracts, ensuring the appropriate tools and resources are available for each of these areas - Lead funding support for investigator initiated studies - Partner with the Baylor Foundation in interfacing with philanthropic opportunities - Foster an environment of active communication and collaboration between researchers across all locations of BSWRI - Ensure support of clinical trials and support for each therapeutic service area to facilitate translational research (moving research innovation to clinical steps) - Determine whether investigator-initiated protocols require an IND or an independent DSMB; provide support for BSWH’s internal DSMB - Coordinate and participate in BSWH and BSWRI IP (Intellectual Property) Committee and IP disclosure evaluation process - Oversee research contributing to estimation of demand for proposed projects; monitor development of products and new venture timetables to ensure that all are delivered on time and within budget - Oversee BSWH and BRI intellectual property portfolio and costs - Drive the development of appropriate supports, i.e. website, newsletter, trade publications, to support commercialization efforts Development - In collaboration with the Chief Academic Officer and President of the Baylor Health Care System Foundation, develop plans for obtaining philanthropic support for BSWH/BSWRI research programs - Present to internal and external audiences, generating interest and support for BSWH and BSWRI programs - Encourage publication and presentation productivity of research team with appropriate organizations/events REQUIREMENTS - PhD/MD or other advance degree equivalent - Candidates may come from any medical specialty, or research background - At least five years’ experience in scientific and business operation leadership PREFERRED CANDIDATE PROFILE - A recognized leader in a similar organization - Strategic mindset with the ability to translate strategy into actionable plans - Results-oriented executive that thrives in collaborative, mission-focused culture - Professional gravitas with exceptional communication skills; ability to articulate the work of BSWRI in a compelling manner in any setting - Inspirational leader that holds teams accountable while facilitating their development; track record of building strong and effective teams - A person of highest integrity that embraces the mission, vision and values of BSWH and the goals of BSWRI - Politically astute and organizationally savvy - Track record of measurable success in leading a sizeable clinical research organization - Credible research background from a recognized research institute - Track record of securing government and other public and private sector funding - Basic understanding of concepts associated with clinical trials, partnerships, IP protection, etc. and track record of partnering with internal or outside counsel GOALS & OBJECTIVES Performance goals and objectives for the President over the first 24 months include: - Establish strong relationships across BSWRI and BSWH key stakeholders - Assess current research activities at BSWRI. - Identify opportunities for the expansion of research more broadly within BSWH - Advance work in BSWRI’s core mission of health science research and population health - Lead the growth of new and existing research programs and expanding collaborations with external partners including Baylor College of Medicine - Working with the BSWRI governing Board and BSWH research leaders, develop a five year strategic plan for BSWRI, ensuring that research programs are aligned with the System's key service lines goals - Elevate the visibility of BSWRI through advancement of industry relationships, speaking engagements, and other appropriate initiatives |
