The department is the home of four multidisciplinary research centers and offers outstanding core facilities and generous laboratory space in the modern state-of-the-art Arthur C. Guyton Research Center. A large group of prominent, NIH-funded researchers work in the areas of cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases and offer excellent opportunities for collaboration. The department ranked in the top 10 percent in total NIH funding among all physiology departments for the past 10 years and its members have served in leadership positions of multiple professional societies. UMMC has a large, diverse patient population and is the home of the Jackson Heart Study, an NIH-sponsored study of risk factors for cardiovascular, renal and metabolic disease in >5300 African Americans. Additional information about the Department of Physiology and Biophysics can be found at https://www.umc.edu/physiology/ and an overview of UMMC can be found at: https://www.umc.edu/UMMC/About-Us/About-Us-Overview.html
UMMC offers a wide range of patient care programs that are integral to its education and research missions, including bariatric surgery and weight management programs. In addition to University Hospital, UMMC has three specialized hospitals on the Jackson campus, including the only children's hospital in Mississippi, a women and infants' hospital, and a critical care hospital.
