| This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Learn more. The New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVHCS) Surgical Service is recruiting for a Physician (Ophthalmology) Section Chief. The NMVHCS is a training site for University of New Mexico medical students and residents. The selected candidate may also be eligible to obtain a faculty appointment with the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. UNM faculty track and rank are dependent on qualifications. Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Provide Ophthalmology care to Veterans both clinically and surgically to a high population of cataract, glaucoma, retinal disease and diabetic patients. Specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of medical and surgical diseases and conditions of the eye, its related structures, and visual pathways. Examine and treat patients functioning as a comprehensive ophthalmologist clinically and surgically and determine the need for surgical or non-surgical treatment of routine, urgent or emergent patients. Perform preoperative evaluations and informed consent for patients. Perform surgical procedures related to injuries and diseases of the eye and visual system. Utilize laser (Pl, YAG) on the orbit, extraocular muscles, anterior and posterior segments of the eye, and surrounding structures, as well as intra-ocular injections and cataract extractions with lens implantations. Ensure appropriate post-operative care and follow-up is conducted on patients. Perform non-medical treatments, including issuing prescriptions of lenses and aids for low vision. Perform intravitreal injections for retinal diseases including exudative age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Perform ancillary testing including Ocular Coherence Tomography, ultrasound, fluorescein angiography analysis. Collaborate with other physician specialists and medical staff in overall treatment of patient's medical conditions. Supervise ophthalmology residents in clinic and in surgery. The position offered is for a physician within an academic setting dedicated to education, innovation, quality and academic research opportunities. Position would include a joint appointment as University of New Mexico Faculty and provide for experiences educating fellows, residents and medical students. The Ophthalmology Section Chief of Surgery Service functions under the overall management of the Chief, Surgical Service. The physician functions within an interdisciplinary staff consisting of physicians, optometrists, physician extenders, technicians, administrative and clerical staff. He/she is responsible and accountable for ensuring the provision of comprehensive surgical/clinical services and complies with established policies within the Department of Surgery/ Ophthalmology section. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm
